Google Deepmind: AI can now predict the weather – that’s snow joke!

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now transforming weather forecasting – offering unprecedented accuracy and efficiency for the first time, thanks to Google Deepmind! Traditional methods can rely on complex physical models and extensive computational resources, often requiring hours and hours to generate forecasts. In contrast, AI models can process vast datasets much more rapidly, delivering precise predictions in a fraction of the time.

Enter – Google DeepMind’s GenCast, an AI-based tool said to outperform leading forecasting models, including the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ ENS model. Google says GenCast adapts to Earth’s spherical geometry and generates precise probability distributions of future weather scenarios. Trained on decades of data, the tech excels in forecasting extreme conditions like heatwaves and cyclones, providing accurate predictions up to 15 days in advance!

Forecasting Ahead

Similarly, DeepMind’s GraphCast predicts weather conditions up to 10 days ahead more accurately and faster than traditional systems, it has been found. It processes data in less than a minute on a single desktop computer – that is a significant improvement over conventional methods that take hours on supercomputers.

Beyond Tech Giants

The integration of AI in weather forecasting is not limited to tech giants with organizations such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) exploring machine learning techniques to enhance Earth system modeling, aiming to improve the incorporation of satellite observations and overall forecast accuracy.

AI’s ability to analyze extensive historical weather data helps it identify patterns and predict events that traditional models might miss.

But…

However, challenges remain, particularly with forecasting rare and extreme weather events. Experts suggest combining AI tools with traditional forecasting models could yield the most accurate predictions.

AI could therefore be ushering in a new era of weather forecasting, characterized by enhanced precision and speed.

As technologies continue to evolve, they hold promise of more reliable forecasts, aiding in better preparation for weather-related events and mitigating their impacts.

The race to achieve AGI – Artifical General Intelligence (AI cleverer than any human intelligence) – is now well an truly on with Zuckerberg getting in the mix…

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has gone on Instagram to talk about how he is bringing two of his big AI teams closer together to work on attempts to super charge efforts to creage Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

AGI would finally lift AI efforts well and truly above human intelligence levels – some view this as an exciting advancement of technology in the 21st century whereas there are fears machines may eventually outsmart humans altogether and overthrow their entire existence.

Anyway… here is Zuck with his plan!

Mark Zuckerberg on Instagram

In summary, he said:

  • Meta’s long term vision is to build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit.
  • They will bring two major AI research efforts (FAIR and GenAI) closer together to support this.
  • They are currently training the next-gen model Llama 3, and building massive compute infrastructure to support a future roadmap, including 350k H100s by the end of this year — and overall almost 600k H100s equivalents of compute if you include other GPUs.
  • Seeing progress building new AI-centric computing devices like Ray Ban Meta smart glasses.

Fascinating stuff – let’s see how this plays out and what others do to respond.

What Will Happen in AI in 2024? 5 predictions for the new year!

It seems fitting though to start the new year by looking at potential trends with AI going into 2024 – let’s take a look at 5 key themes…

The AI Superhero Blog is back live with a redesign and we will be back blogging all news, chat, tips and tricks linked to AI most days going forward along with accompanying posts on social media. There are also plans to bring back the podcast – more on that to come!

It seems fitting though to start the new year by looking at potential trends with AI going into 2024 – let’s take a look at 5 key themes…

What Will Happen in AI in 2024?

  1. An explosion of Generative AI use by businesses of all shapes and sizes

2024 will be the year when not only large businesses, but also medium and small companies, start to enter the fray for Gen AI tools. Recent reported surveys only put current reported ‘gone live’ usage of AI at 14% (compared with 45% piloting/experimenting with Gen AI). This was a 10% leap from earlier on in 2023. This figure is likely to mushroom in 2024 and will have significant implications for companies, operations and resources. As businesses make more general use of AI, data and security issues will come into the mainstream conscience again and insurance policies (along with liability clauses) will need to provide cover for AI hallucinations and similar issues. More to come on this blog!

2. Litigation – AI gets sued!

Well, AI won’t get sued but those using it will be! The New York Times recently became the first major news publisher to launch a copyright lawsuit (against Open AI) for allegedly presenting its content to users and presenting potential copyright infringements. More info on this is here but we will likely get into it more on the blog. As AI develops, other publishers and parties may likely sue AI businesses, tech companies and associated creators with using outputs linked to their content with no attribution. Transparency linked to AI use will also be important. It will be intriguing to see what happens.

3. Evolution of Multimodal AI

2024 will likely herald a significant advancement in generative AI capabilities This will mean more sophisticated application of AI across a vast variety of differing modes of interaction and data types as users mix and match video, text, audio and image outputs. As such, newer models will likely become more usable, much more dynamic and exciting.

4. ‘Wearing Your AI’ in Daily Life

Gen AI will start to move away from laptops and clunky computers and become part of wearable tech (glasses, watches, personal assistants, more accessible smartphones). This will offer a much more personal and immersive experience than what is offered with current tech in such devices.

5. Cyber War!

That got your attention but it’s highly anticipated that the use of Gen AI will greatly evolve in the use of cyber warfare systems going forward. Terrifying! AI will improve accuracy at hitting critical buildings/infrastructure and also developing biological and chemical weaponry. It will also be deployed to help counter such security issues.

Search the Internet with Chat GPT!

You can now use ChatGPT to go further back than 2021 and use the Internet – here’s how!

The Open AI tool has now been opened up so it can search via Bing in the ChatGPT interface for the first time (this is only available to Enterprise and Plus customers).

We tried it for the first time and were able to find the latest news stories of the day in the tool.

The function still feels quite basic but has the ability to be game changing as information comes back which is up-to-date for the first time.

Does ‘3-second voice’ cloning by AI scare you?

Microsoft’s VALL-E claims to clone anyone’s voice using three seconds of a clip – there are fears that such technology could lead to fraud, phishing and a spread of disinformation.

Every time we use our voice we are making something unique to us. Our unique tone and inflection can be used to identify us to others, but it is not easy. Well, that was until Microsoft came along! The tech giant has developed an AI tool called VALL-E, which can get its hands on a three-second audio clip and clone your voice in less than a minute. Click the link here to see the demo.

The new AI tool uses a voice recording of just three seconds and converts it into speech. Microsoft said 60,000 hours of speech trained its its new AI tool, that can mimic someone’s voice, including its tone and charisma, very easily. The software uses machine learning to process the data from the initial recording and then creates a realistic copy using text-to-speech technology. It is not too dissimilar to other software out there, including Descript and WellSaidLabs, but it only requires three seconds of inputted audio data! Examples of what can be produced are below:

The implications of the tool are vast. It could be used to create a voiceover of any video, which would be useful for those with visual impairments. It may also help people who have lost their voices due to illness or injury and need an alternative way of communicating. The software would also be useful in law enforcement and intelligence gathering, where it could be used to mimic someone’s voice and make them appear to say something that they did not actually say. This could be used for phishing, spreading misinformation or fraud. Call centres and customer service chat bots could use the tool.

For now, Researchers are working on making the AI tool more lifelike. This will involve improving the quality of its audio output and making it less robotic-sounding.

This is just one of many recent breakthroughs in the world of AI. Researchers have also managed to create AI bots that can spot fake news stories on social media, and a computer program has been developed which can detect cancerous moles.

The code is not yet available to the public but sound files and a basic demo can be accessed.

Is ChatGPT set to charge $20 a month?

There is fresh speculation that the generative AI tool (link here) may launch a pro version that has a monthly charge.

Take-off AI tool ChatGPT is predicted to be “everywhere” in 2023 – but that may not be the case if there is a charge for the generative product. Having gained 1m registered users in just FIVE days with queries costing its operator Open.AI an estimated $3m a momnth to run, something may have to give.

Co-founder and president Greg Brockman is now asking users how much they would pay for a “professional version” of the tool on Twitter. It also invites them to be added to a waiting list for that version! Here it is:

You can click straight through to the link here to have your say.

Whether this means that the free tool will become unuseable is not yet known. However, there is clearly a risk or that regular punters end up with a tool that is underdeveloped and not as smart?

Will there be inequities with this technology? What if you don’t have the money for it? How much would you pay for it? Please let us know what you think in the comments below…

Does ChatGPT mean “goodbye homework”?

Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted ‘goodbye homework’ amid concerns that tools such as ChatGPT will make it impossible for teachers to set homework for students.

The AI technology is making it easier than ever to get basic essays and responses to questions that students could gain passes for. Below is an example that I tried in relation to a British GCSE Shakespeare question.

Critics claim that Hamlet is a play with a major tragic flaw – its main character.

‘The inaction of Hamlet coupled with his melancholy attitude ultimately lead to his demise’

How far do you agree with this statement?

ChatGPT outputted:

The response is perhaps brief, basic and lacking in detail but the grammar is excellent and it provides a solid basis for an answer and it shows what the tool can do (and may improve upon as it becomes more powerful).

There are reports that education authorities such at in New York are now blocking ChatGPT with billionaire Elon Musk tweeting “goodbye homework” – see below…

Elon Musk replying ‘goodbye homework’ to a report that the New York City education department is blocking ChatGPT on school devices

In the UK, England exam regulator Ofqual and the Department of Education are investigating whether the chatbot can be used to cheat. Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told the BBC: “We’re aware of concerns that ChatGPT may be used by some pupils to write answers and pass this off as their own work, although we have not directly received reports of problems from our members thus far.”

This is likely to change in the coming weeks!
